Music is powerful. One of the ways that best connects me to God is worshiping through music. There's something about standing in a room filled with people all there for the same purpose–to sing praises to our Lord and Savior. Or even just being by myself, singing in the office has the same effect.
Recently, Jordan and I, along with our fabulous mamas, went to see one of our favorite bands in concert, All Sons + Daughters. They. are. AWESOME. This was actually the second time we saw them and loved it just as much.
When I'm feeling overwhelmed by life or a particular situation, A Reason to Sing always moves me to tears. Reminding me of the loving care of our Father God, that He still holds the whole world in His hands even when it feels like we're falling apart.
Called Me Higher also cues the waterworks pretty hard. (Are you picking up on the emotional side I have? Geesh.) Here's one of my favorite parts of the song:
And I could hold on
I could hold on to who I am and never let You
Change me from the inside
And I could be safe
I could be safe here in Your arms and never leave home
Never let these walls down
But You have called me higher
You have called me deeper
And I'll go where You will lead me Lord
You have called me higher
You have called me deeper
And I'll go where You lead me Lord
Where You lead me
Where You lead me Lord
As you may know, my husband and I spent the last year in Ljubljana, Slovenia as missionaries with Cru, and will be returning next August for five years. Ironically, I remember sitting in our living room overseas, journaling and praying to God about what His plans for our life would be next. The thought of leaving our family, friends and life in the States for (at least) five years, brought anxiety and fear to my heart. A Reason to Sing allowed me to work through these emotions and really give it all to God.
By the spring of this year, Jordan and I made the decision to come back long term to Slovenia. And that's when I first heard Called Me Higher. What affirmation and assurance this brought me. As we sang it at the concert, I felt the love of God so intimately, His embrace encouraging me to go where He leads.
Friends, I pray that whatever you're dealing with, whatever trial you're facing or what big decision lies ahead, that the knowledge of God's sovereignty, the closeness of His presence and incredible love He offers will touch your heart and encourage you.
[PS–Shout out to Tim Timmons, opening act for AS+D. Your testimony, love for Christ and music were good for the soul. Check him out if you haven't before!]
